In this study, we analyzed production of word-initial and word-medial Korean plosives by native Korean speakers and Mongolian speakers in terms of acoustic properties, and then examined the aspects and causes of the differences between the two groups. We measured Mongolian speakers' voice onset time (VOT) and pitch in word-intial position, CD, VOT, and pitch in word-medial position, compared with native Korean speakers' production. In word-medial position, measured voice onset time (VOT) values across aspirated, plain, and tense stops were significantly differed within the Korean group. In word-initial position, there was little difference between plain and aspirated stops within the Korean groups. The VOT values of stops by Mongolian speakers were not significantly differed from the result of Korean speakers' in plain and aspirated stops in word-initial position. The VOT values showed no difference in plain and tense stops in word-medial position. The pitch values in the initial vowels following stops by Korean speakers showed some regular intervals in the order of plain<tense <aspirated in word-initial position, and there was significant difference between plain and aspirated stops. In word-medial position, the pitch values showed some significant difference between plain and tense and between plain and aspirated, respectively. On the other hand, most of the pitch values depending on the types of stops by Mongolian speakers have no significant differences in word-initial and word-final position when compared with one another. To summarize, VOT values only cannot be used as a means of distinguishing plain and aspirated stops. It is the pitch that plays the significant role in distinguishing stops produced by Korean and Mongolian speakers. This finding implies that it would be effective to teach Korean stops by the level of the pitch values (plain<tense <aspirated).
