There are largely three previous accounts of so-inversion constructions: pro-VP, VP-ellipsis, and remnant movement. Those accounts analyze clause initial so differently, either as a polarity adverb or as a pro-VP. After a careful review on the previous literature and novel data found in this research, we argue that so is a polarity focus particle. The syntactic determination of so leads us to take the view that the null VP is elided. We argue against the previous VP-ellipsis analysis, however, because it faces both empirical and conceptual problems. We propose that the subject in so-inversion does not move to SpecTP to satisfy the EPP requirement because the constraint on the information structure may suspend the requirement (Culicover & Winkler 2008). Suspension of the EPP allows us to explain many of the puzzling facts in so-inversion. First, it straightforwardly accounts for how a modal and an auxiliary may appear before the subject. Second, it also accounts for two types of VP-ellipsis in so-inversion which are licensed by a different licensor.
