This paper tries to give a unified account to different syntactic behavior between main verbs and auxiliaries with respect to VP ellipsis. This paper assumes that the deletion under identity condition is intuitively natural and empirically motivated. Under this assumption, this paper tries to find a solution that keeps the identity condition intact. By adopting a most developed version of Affix Hopping as PF Merger in the sense of Bošković and Lasnik (2003) and Bošković (2003), the present paper gives a unified account to the difference regarding VP ellipsis. The present analysis can also do away with ad hoc devices either like Lasnik's division of word formation process with respect to main verbs and auxiliary verbs or like Potsdam's (1997) X0 and XP trace distinction with respect to interpretation.
