This paper is purposed to propose a hybrid analysis of the so-inversion in English. To be concrete, this paper proposes that the so-inversion in English results from applications of different types of movement: head movement and remnant movement. This is claimed to be better than the analyses either by Tada(2007) or by Hatakeyama et al.(2010). Tada(2007)claims that the so-inversion is derived by moving the subject to the sentence-final position via Heavy NP Shift, which is dubious in that the moving subject is sometimes not heavy enough. Hatakeyama et al.(2010)also bear problems in that they make some empirically false predictions.
In terms of combination of head movement and (VP-) remnant movement, the present paper can overcome the difficulties and explain other examples of English, which would require extra devices to the previous analyses.
