I investigate in this paper how instrument with-PPs in English are licensed given that they are not syntactically obligatory. It is examined whether the presence of instrument PPs is constrained by the predicates (which will verify the argumenthood of instrument) and if so, what properties of the predicates license their presence. More specifically, it is tested whether the presence of instruments is influenced by such semantic, morphological, and syntactic properties of the predicates as semantic obligatoriness, morphological relatedness to instrument nouns,subject agentivity, and instrument-subject alternatability. The data for the current study have been gathered from the 100-million-word BYU-BNC corpus. This corpus study shows that all four properties, which are lexical properties of predicates, are significant factors that contribute to licensing the instrument with-PPs in English.
