The purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of L1 on metaphor understanding of Korean learners of English and the degrees of certainty for meanings. To investigate this issue, we classified four types of metaphor expressions exploiting physical organ terms according to the similarities and differences of conceptual metaphors between Korean and English. The participants were then asked to translate English metaphoric expressions, which were presented once with context and once without, into Korean. They were also asked to mark the degree of certainty regarding the accuracy of their own translation of the metaphors. To analyze the result the participants were divided into two different groups of learners: high English proficiency and low English proficiency. There are two main findings. Generally, with context, and the participants with higher English proficiency are much better to understand the English metaphoric expressions than those with lower proficiency but there is no significant difference with certainty of the meanings between the two groups. However, the types show different degrees to which the participants understand and are certain of their translation. With equivalent metaphoric expressions and equivalent conceptual basis to L1, the participants show the best understanding and highest certainty of their translation. In similar metaphoric expressions to L1 but different conceptual meaning from L1, they show the least understanding but certainty is still high, whether with context or without and regardless of English proficiency. Based on the findings, pedagogical implications are also discussed.
