The purpose of this study is to emphasize the educational necessity of contextual antonyms and to explore efficient educational methods to teach it. For this purpose, the study examined the current state of education for Korean antonyms through analyzing Korean materials and the previous studies on antonyms. In the result of reviewing textbooks, antonyms have taken position of 4% in educational vocabulary lists. It means teaching antonyms has been treated carelessly. Even though contextual antonyms have been not to adduce as educational items, Korean learners could have difficulty to understand of change meaning of contextual antonym which varies according to the context. This study suggests that a selection principle, a presentation method and a presentation order of educational list in teaching contextual antonym. They are ‘choosing the polysemy in the basic vocabulary and teaching the antonym of derivative meaning which lays high frequency of use’. Selected contextual antonyms as the teaching objective are better to show with co-occurred expressions. Contextual antonyms would be presented complementary antonym, antonym relation of basic meaning and universal antonym without relation of Korean language and culture first.
