Recently, in KFL many literature education methods are being studied in a variety of ways. However, among the many studies, it is still difficult to find audio-visual media that is being utilized in Korean education. At the present time, many learners are exposed to various types of media, including television dramas, the internet, and films. Therefore, we should utilize these types of media in literature education to encourage a more stimulating learning environment for the learner. Among the variety of audio-visual media, this study plans to present films in literature education. If a film is used in Korean literature education along with the novel, learners are not only able to easily understand the meaning of the novel, but also increase their interest in Korean culture and society. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the importance of reading the novel while actively viewing the film to create meaningful discussion in the classroom among the learners. Although the film was originally adapted from a novel, the narrator, characters, setting and the ending are considerably different. When comparing and analyzing these elements through the novel and film, the learners become aware of the benefits of studying both medias. This study offers a real example of teaching a novel by utilizing Ju Yo-seob’s novel, ‘The Houseguest and My Mother’ (1931) along with the film adaptation of the novel directed by Shin Sang-ok (1961).
