In this study, 10 young women(average 23.7 years old) who lives in Seoul metropolitan area and were randomly sampled were asked to applicate β-glucan 1% essence to their own face skin twice a day for 4 weeks(28 days) from Sep. 8, 2003 to Oct. 5, 2003, which was prepared specifically to determine the potential cosmetic effects of β-glucan(a sort of natural polysaccharide) on skin. Then, any variation in skin moisture content, skin oil(sebum) content, melanin and erythema index were determined respectively via a non-invasive skin testing instrument. The results can be outlined as follows: 1. The result of measuring skin moisture content showed that the longer days of administration around cheek and lips led to higher average skin moisture content. Moreover, there were significant difference in the variation of skin moisture content using both parametric(repeated measurement ANOVA) and non-parametric method(Kendall's W-test) in statistical level(p<0.05). That is, the longer hours of β-glucan administration led to higher skin moisture content. 2. For melanin index around cheek, both average and standard deviation were decreased. The longer hours of β-glucan administration led to lower melanin index, which indicated certain significance in statistical level(p<0.05). Summing up, It is estimated that β-glucan will be very available as skin moisture retention agent in cosmetics for dry skin and furthermore will replace hyaluronic acid, which has been one of the most popular agents for better skin moisture retention of existing cosmetics.
