Cultural substratum of Romania was formed by aboriginal Dacian traditions on which much more advanced Roman cultures were superposed as an additional factor during the Romanization period. Until the Roman emperor's order of withdrawal from Dacian region to the southern part of Danubian river (A.D.271), the substratum culture was heavily influenced by Rome even though that period was very short, circa 160 years, and Dacia was transformed into a society of Romanized civilization practicing Roman customs, Latin language and Christianity. After withdrawal of Roman empire various foreign cultures were executed in diverse ways, e.g. German and Asian migratory peoples’ influences from 3rd century, Slavic agricultural influences from early 7th century, orthodox Christianity from 10th century, the Ottoman Empire's control from 15th century on Romanian people until modern times, i.e. at the end of 18th and at the beginning of the 19th century. All these impacts left big or small traces in the cultural history of this people. With the beginning of modernity, West European cultures were flourished into Romania, especially from France and these became the basic factors of modernity and mainstream for noble elite classes. During the period of socialist regime, western cultures were considered remnants of capitalistic tradition and totally denied by communist party, which made the Dacian tradition to be exaggerated instead of them. Recently, after the collapse of communism, Romanian people have gotten through huge social changes receiving varied foreign influences. It is normal to be influenced by alien cultures, but this people showed a distinctive feature in accepting them, and it is an important factor in directing their orientation of cultural development. In each period of their history, they tried to survive throughout manifold foreign influences adapting themselves, and this attitude decided directions of development.
