This paper explores major discussions on the state of exception to examine the condition of critique in the age of impasse. Taking a cue from Zygmunt Bauman’s usage of Giorgio Agamben’s homo sacer in a global context, it reveals that the same sovereign logic of exception is innate in the global expansion of capitalism. The banality of the state of exception indicates that it is the dominant paradigm of government and capitalistic exploitation in our age. In this world where the claims of equality and justice are deeply urgent, we critics fail to envision a future to come. In discussing the limit of our critical imagination this paper explicates where our critique fails and how it fails against the state of exception. In doing so, it concludes that this critical reflection on the condition of our critique can be a starting point for our renewed imagination toward the future to come.
