The equivalence of translation must be discussed not only in terms of vocabulary and grammar but also in terms of text. Therefore, in this study, asymmetry between the original text and translated text was discussed based on the number of sentences. The Chinese novel “Honggaoliang” and its translation were compared in order to examine the asymmetry of sentences, that is, the change in the number of sentences. This study focused on cases in which the number of sentences in the translation was reduced from that of the original text. The types of reduction were categorized as “sharing sentence constituents,” “same subject,” “same space,” and “same predicate.” First, in the translated texts, when the constituent of a preceding sentence was also used in the following sentence, the two sentences were often combined into one. When the subject was the same, translated texts also often combined sentences into one in order to avoid repeating the same subject. In the original text, when describing the same space-time, sentences were separated when the feelings or subjects of focus were different. However, in the translated texts, these were placed in one sentence that clearly described the time-space. Also, when the predicate was the same, sentences were sometimes combined, that is, when two actions took place sequentially.
