The purpose of this study is to lexically analyze and explore some ways to use the small corpus exclusively designed for effective TOEFL independent essay writing. For this study, the researcher collected sample essays evenly from five types of TOEFL essay topics: agree/disagree, preference, 'If' question, description and comparison/contrast. To help students get familiar with certain types and expressions that appear frequently on actual tests, a special TOEFL essay corpus was designed Based on 348 sample essays from the Internet and current TOEFL reference books. From this corpus, frequent words, keywords, and 2-, 3-, and 4-word clusters were extracted using a corpus analysis program such as AntConc. Although the analysis of the extracted words, keywords, and clusters failed to demonstrate that the target TOEFL essays have form-specific features, teaching collocations have already proved effective in many previous studies, as they help students understand the features of writing, syntactic variety and appropriate word choices. This study incorporates an instructional model and activities for teaching collocations from TOEFL essays. It recommends that a more comprehensive corpus, focusing on specific types and themes, should be further developed to comprise rich examples for course materials.
