The present study researched the preference and usefulness of smartphone English apps for English study of EFL university learners. 102 students participated in the individual English practice using smartphone English apps outside of the classroom. For the first semester, 32 humanity major students participated in the practice for 10 weeks and took pre and post mock TOEIC test and answered a post- questionnaire. In the second semester, 70 engineering major students participated in the study for 6 weeks. They answered a post-questionnaire but did not take a mock TOEIC test due to uncontrollable circumstances. Most participants responded very positively to a questionnaire regarding the use of smartphone English apps for learner-centered English study. They highly recommended the ‘English Pod Cast’ app stating its usefulness, and the next recommended apps were ‘Tomato TOEIC’ and ‘Hackers TOEIC’. On the pre and post mock TOEIC test, 32 students performed better in the post mock L/C and R/C TOEIC tests, but only the mean on the R/C test was statistically significant. The findings of the study suggest the need of more research to investigate useful English apps for college students in an EFL context and its effectiveness on English ability.
