The purpose of this study was to investigate to what extent college students who took a General English course enhanced their English speaking proficiency. Forty-one students who took the TOEIC test in spring 2011 participated in this study. The TOEIC speaking test scores were analyzed to investigate the students’ improvement in their speaking English proficiency. Paired-sample t-test and ANCOVA results were analyzed to answer the following research questions: First, is it effective to improve TOEIC speaking skills for both lower and higher level college students through practice and use of English in the General English course? Second, is there any significant difference in speaking improvement between the lower and higher level college students after one-semester English course in their TOEIC speaking ability? The results revealed that the higher level students' scores increased in all criteria of the tests while the lower level students partially raised them. In comparison of the degree of improvement between the two groups, there were significant differences in the post-test scores. Most of the students who joined English course did effectively increase their scores on their TOEIC speaking tests although the lower level group did not show as much progress as the higher level group. Based on the results of the study, pedagogical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
