This study aimed to investigate factors influencing listening comprehension of a foreign language, and to discuss their implications for EFL education. A number of research showed that listening comprehension is an active process in which the listener constructs a meaning out of the information provided by a speaker and a complex operation that a number of variables are involved in its process. There is a dire need for examining these factors in order to develop EFL learners' listening comprehension because examining those factors can provide EFL teachers with a blueprint when their students have difficulty in listening comprehension process. Although there are numerous variables related to listening comprehension, this study focuses on five major factors affecting EFL learners' listening comprehension competency; 1) speed rates, 2) phonological phenomenon knowledge, 3) lexical knowledge, 4) background knowledge, and 5) listening strategies. The current study explores the existing research and theoretical perspectives in each of the five factors in turn, followed by their implications for EFL classrooms.
