This paper attempts to analyze new aspects of Ju. Lotman’s late semiotic theory. In his latest work Culture and Explosion, Ju. Lotman introduces such new concepts as ‘explosion’ and ‘unpredictability.’ These new concepts make it possible to try a political interpretation of the theoretical systems of Ju. Lotman, who has generally been regarded apolitical so far. In his earlier works Ju. Lotman defines the structure of Russian culture as a dualism that lacks axiologically neutral spheres. Consequently, according to Ju. Lotman’s definition, Russian culture is likely to show maximalistic and polarized features. The realities of post-perestroika period led Ju. Lotman to think that the changes in Russia may bring forth catastrophic explosions owing to the binary structure of Russian culture. At the same time, however, these changes can also work as a chance for transition from Russian binary structure to Western-style ternary structure. In Culture and Explosion, Ju. Lotman tries to seek for a way to “explosion without catastrophe,” examining the possibility of such transition. This paper tries to concretize Ju. Lotman’s idea of “explosion without catastrophe,” by comparing cultural semiotics of Ju. Lotman with the theory of J. Rancière, which will allow us to reflect upon the theory of Ju. Lotman in the context of ‘liberation theory.’
