"It is the women in Joseon Dynasty who live the unhappiest lives in the world. For these poor souls, Iʼd like to send this message to the citizens of Joseon. Even though women are not less competent than men, the latter tend to disrespect the former in this country. Because most men here are not civilized yet, they attempt to oppress women by force. How brutal it is. If women in Joseon Dynasty get educated, they will know how to control men. Dear, women in Joseon Dynasty! Get educated and retake your right!"The said article written by Dr. Seo Jae-phil was quoted from The Independence dated April 12, 1986. It unveils the severity of abuse and violence on women. Even though over a century has passed, violence on women still continues. Due to biological and socio-cultural differences by gender, there has been a disparity in social status and economic roles between men and women. In particular, physical assault on women has been observed because of difference in physical strength by gender. Actually, over 50% of this kind of domestic violence appears during the first five years of marriage. Therefore, it is necessary to make people aware of the severity of domestic violenceand teach them how to cope with marriage conflict before marriage or during the early stage of the marriage. The kind of change in perception may stop domestic violence by building family-friendly social culture and establishing a gender equality-respected society.
