This paper uses Réné Girard's theory of mimetics as a means of re-reading Shakespeare's tragedy, Coriolanus, and shedding new light on the play and the main characters. Girard's exposition of mimetic desire and scapegoating provide a new perspective on both the events and the participants in the play, suggesting that Caius Martius (Coriolanus) suffers from displaced and undeveloped mimetic desire that is eventually his undoing. Intense as his love-hate relationship with his enemy/friend Aufidius is, the shared mimetic desires that exist between them come, on Coriolanus' part, from his mother, and lead ultimately (when his mother presents new sets of desires to him), to his death. In addition, his honest, but naïve, bluff, and proud disposition causes him, on two occasions, to be ritually sacrificed by the societies around him, thus fulfilling his Girardian role as an innocent sacrificial victim, who restores peace and order to divided, fracturing societies through his death, and is subsequently revered as a hero.
