Athol Fugard sets his drama in the Republic of South Africa in the midst of apartheid. He presents 3 central characters to the audience. Mr. M serves as teacher in Location. He teaches the importance of education. He stresses that learning undigested by thought is labor lost, and thought unassisted by learning is perilous. He treasures Thami, another main character. However, his education is limited by the Bantu Education Act and given to him oppressively as a traditional African teaching. He is represented as intellectual who can not resist actively. Thami is Mr. M's favorite pupil. He is bright and has leadership. However, he wants to give his people liberty and freedom and, thus, joins in radical protest. He considers Mr. M's thought is old-fashioned and freedom can be gained through the violence. Isabel is white female student. She realizes the fact of the black when participating at debate. She respects and admires the other's culture and tries to live as South African. By presenting these characters, Fugard makes the audience ask themselves. Who is right to make South Africa better place for every people? Each character has its own merit and weakness. And Fugard asks us what is the best way to liberate the country from racialism and achieve national unity.
