This article takes as study subject the Chinese laborers who came to Sinuiju as a border city in the 1920-1930s. Although the number of Chinese laborers was the highest in Sinuiju in the 1920s, the studies on Chinese laborers never began in earnest. The study results are as follows. First, the power of unity and organization of the Chinese laborers in Sinuiju was stronger than any other regions. We can also know that Chinese laborers had gone on a large scale strike independently which was unusual in other regions. Second, the power of unity of Chinese laborers was the strongest on Sinuiju China Consulate and it acted as a basis for other organizations and networks such as Chinese Merchant Organization(中華商會), Chinese Laborer Association(中華勞工協 會), and Coolie Organization(苦力幇)Third, as we could see during the progress of ‘the case where the Chinese barber cut off a Chosun customer’s nose’, the conflict between the Chinese and the Chosun was the core of the labor problems in the society of Sinuiju. Sinuiju was already facing problems related to the Chinese laborers since the 1910s, and ‘Sinuiju Area Association’(新義州朝鮮人地方會) directly submitted a suggestion document requesting a solution to the Colonial Japanese Government. Therefore the discrimination against the Chinese, with the background of labor problems, was the same as other regions.
However, in fourth, conflicts and discords were not the only thing standing out between the two. Sinuiju Chinese laborers passed through the Chinese border city of Andong to enter. Sinuiju, where there were many daily border crossing and exchanges happened on a socio-economic aspect, is a place the locality is well shown. Therefore Sinuiju shows a different aspect, unlike Incheon or Pyoyang, where the social space of the Chinese had to shrink and reduce because of intensifying social conflicts between the Chinese and the Chosun.
