This paper tries to shed empirical light on the gaps in technology, innovation and R&D cooperation between large enterprises(LE) and small and medium sized enterprises(SME) in mechinery industry using firm-level data from Korean Manufacturing Statatistics over the period of 1991 to 2007 and from Korean Innovation Survey 2008. The main findings are as followings. First, the technology gap between LEs and SMEs has increased constantly since 1998. Second, LEs have higher likelihood to accomplish both product and process innovations than SMEs. Third, the innovation performed by LEs is more radical than that of SMEs when the radicalness is measured in terms of innovative impacts on sales and cost reduction. Lastly, SMEs carry out less R&D cooperation with suppliers and customers than LEs.
