A method for the analysis of an aperture-coupled microstrip patch antenna is presented with a view to developing an improved transmission line model which reflects the offset effect of the aperture. The equivalent circuit consists of two ideal transformers, extended slotlines terminated by short circuit, and microstrip open stubs. The turn ratios can be calculated by applying the reciprocity theorem with the help of the spectral domain immittance approach. For several different cases of the antenna, the corresponding transmission line models are developed and shown to yield accurate series impedances.
