In the later years of his career, William Blake felt alienated from the public sphere of art society dominated by art dealers, patronage, connoisseur, publishers, and so on. The experiences of discord with commercialistic practices of art allowed him to recognize the contrast between the real life in imaginative arts and his ordinary existence. Blake’s ideological and emotional struggles to realize the ideal of art under the disadvantaged environment are reflected in Los, a Blakean figure of artist in Jerusalem. To be precise, Los tries to prevail on his own spectre to labour at the artistic creation. This agonizing spiritual struggle mirrors Blake’s predicament as an artist in the modern world. To transform Albion’s “spectral” system into Jerusalem, which is the intellectual community of art and sciences, Los builds up “Golgonooza” that helps to restore the integrity of senses and to unfold ‘minute particulars’ of life. However, the city of art is surrounded with the walls of oppression and exploitation that have conspired to obstruct liberty to exercise imagination and creativity. Thus, the artistic creation should be accompanied with the creation of relationship, in which an individual’s mental gift is fully appreciated and “intellectual war” encourages brotherhood and love among human beings.
