This paper analyzed the effects of industrial production (manufacturing) and foreign directinvestment on trade relative to China and the United States covering the period from 1991to 2012 with the use of Korean industrial FDI data. China and the United States accountfor majority of Korea’s FDI and were used as units of analysis since China and the UnitedStates represent the developing and developed countries, respectively. During the period, thetrade share of US slowed down but that of China rapidly increased. In addition, theproportion of FDI to China has also shown a tendency to increase significantly. Regressionresults showed increases of FDI positive effects on intra-industry trade both in the case ofChina and the United States. Effects of FDI on exports were positive in the case of China,negative relative to the U.S., but statistically insignificant. The effect of FDI on total tradeappeared to be positive in the case of both China and the United States and were statisticallysignificant.
