The purpose of study was to scrutinize speech perception ability of presbycusis in terms of confusion patterns as well as error rate(%) of individual consonant perception. As a case study, one elderly female was participated who speaks English as her first language, yet has suffered from poor ability to perceive speech and to understand conversation in noisy situations due to presbycusis since her age 60. 16 English consonant-vowel syllables consisting of 18 multiple talkers were randomly and unilaterally presented as a function of signal-to-noise ratios. Although she has a symmetrical mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss in low and middle frequencies and better (lower) hearing thresholds at high frequencies above 4,000 Hz in the left ear, her consonant perception did not coincide with the audiogram. Her right ear had much trouble to perceive the consonants when noise presented, compared to the left ear. However, confused consonants (i.e., confusions) were different regardless of having same total consonant error rates. In particular, some consonants consistently responded to an incorrect consonant, rather than having several random confusions. In addition to her case, good results of consonant perception depended on male talker. We need to measure speech perception ability through many presbysusis cases and would make a general conclusion of their perceptual characteristics in the future.
