The purpose of this study was to investigate the types of conflict resolution by clustering the children depending on how they used and combined the strategies of compromise & cooperation, avoidance, concession, and domination in conflict with a best friend. Also, this study reviewed differences in friendship quality and self-esteem according to the types of conflict resolution. The subjects were 580 children(302 boys and 278 girls) who were 5th and 6th grade in elementary schools in Busan. The main findings through this study are as follows: first, the types of children's conflict resolution within a friendship were classified as dominance-oriented type, compromise & cooperation-oriented type, multistrategy-avoidance dodging type, multistrategy-dominance dodging type, multistrategy-active type and nonstrategy–passive type. Secondly, there were significant differences in both friendship quality and children’s self-esteem according to the types of conflict resolution. The type of multistrategy-avoidance dodging showed the best friendship quality and the highest self-esteem, whereas the type of nonstrategy-passive showed the worst friendship quality and the lowest self-esteem. Therefore, to improve children's adjustment, the multistrategy-avoidance dodging type are recommended.
