The purpose of the study is to examine the effect of parenting attitude and parent-adolescent communication on adolescents' empathic ability, and the mediating effect of parent-adolescent communication on the relationship between parenting attitude and adolescents' empathy ability. For the study, questionnaires were administered to 511 students of 7th, 8th and 9th grades from Jeonju and 10th and 11th grades from Daejeon, Jeonju and Gunsan. Collected data were analyzed through mean, standard deviations, frequency analysis, independent samples t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, step-wise multiple regression analysis, multiple regression analysis and regression, using SPSS Win 18.0. The major results of the study are as follows. First, gender was found to have significant influence on parenting attitude, parent-adolescent communication and empathy ability. Second, school type had significant influence on parenting attitude and empathy ability. Third, examining the relative effect of parenting attitude and parent-adolescent communication on empathy ability, the study found that the most influential variable on perspective-taking was father-adolescent communication whereas the most influential variable on empathic concern was mother-adolescent communication. Fourth, in regard to the effect of parenting attitude on empathy ability of adolescents, the mediating effect of parent-adolescent communication varied by the sub-scales of empathy ability.
