설사 연관형 용혈성 요독 증후군은 장출혈성 대장균(EHEC)에 의해 유발되며 미세혈관병성 용혈성빈혈, 혈소판감소, 신기능 감소의 임상 양상을 나타내고 소아에서의 전파 경로는 주로 오염된 음용수나 가축의 분변에 의한 접촉으로 발병하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 저자들은 설사 연관형 HUS 환자의 간병 중에 발생한 장염에서 가족 간에 전파된 용혈성 요독 증후군을 경험하였기에 보고하는 바이다.
