This study was conducted to understand depression, quality of life, and suicidal ideation and to verify the factors affecting on suicidal ideation in the elderly living alone. The data was collected from 1,649 elderly living alone who were over 65 years old from 2008 to 2012 by Korea national health and nutrition examination survey (KNHANES). Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression were used to analyze this data through the SAS 9.1 program. The factors affecting on suicidal ideation were conformed to be education, smoking, subjective health status, stress and pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression which are two of the five sub-domains of quality of life had more suicidal ideation by 3.14 times (CI 1.18-8.38), 1.69 times (CI 1.14-2.50), 1.33 times (CI 0.88-2.01), 2.55 times (CI 1.87-3.47), 1.68 times (CI 0.72-1.88), 3.59 times (CI 1.87-6.89), respectively. Therefore, diagnosis and management for stress, anxiety/depression are required in order to prevent suicidal ideation among the elderly living alone. In addition, the government or community should provide convergence program which includes all factors affecting on suicidal ideation for healthy life of the elderly living alone.
