This study examined the relationships between drinking behaviors and drinking ambivalence, and the mediating effects of drinking restraint in the relationships between drinking behaviors and drinking ambivalence by using male and female drinkers (male: 311, female: 290). The results showed that male drinkers were higher than female drinkers in drinking behaviors (drinking frequency and quantity) and drinking problems (AUDIT). Whereas male drinkers showed a more positive drinking attitude, women drinkers showed a more negative drinking attitude. In the results of mediating effect, for male drinkers, drinking restraint did not mediate between drinking ambivalence and drinking behaviors and problems. Female drinkers exhibited that drinking restraint fully mediated between drinking ambivalence and drinking behaviors and problems. These results suggest that the relationship between drinking ambivalence and drinking restraint should be considered in order to understand self-control of drinking in drinkers, and that a effective strategies to self-control of drinking is needed to reduce a drinking rates and alcohol problems in drinkers.
