The purpose of this study was to identify the awareness and attitudes of students with and without health-related majors toward CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). From October 2011 to January 2012, we conducted the questionnaire survey of awareness and attitudes toward basic life support (BLS). Participants were 1,018 students who voluntarily completed the questionnaire form. They comprised students pursuing HRM (health-related majors) and those pursuing NHRM (non-health related majors) in universities in Daejeon and Gangwon Provinces in Korea. We developed a questionnaire including demographics, experiences of BLS training, self-assessed confidence for bystander CPR and willingness to perform bystander CPR. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS version 9.0 program. Means and standard deviations were calculated for continuous variables, while frequencies and proportions were derived for categorical data. The experience of BLS training was analysed by chi-square test and t-test. The willingness to perform bystander CPR was calculated using by logistic regression analysis for each of the five scenarios. Logistic regression and odds ratio for performing CPR on a stranger in an emergency situation showed a higher odds ratio for HRM than NHRM for all variables (p<.001). These results suggest that providing ongoing CPR training to laypersons would prevent out of hospital cardiac arrest and improve the cardiac arrest survival rate.
