This research examined the clinical usefulness of the MMPI-2 substance abuse scales (AAS, APS, and MAC-R) by comparing a male substance abuser group (195 alcohol and 100 drug users) and male psychiatric inpatients (196 inpatients), and two groups of substance dependents classified by cutoffs in Korea. They participated in a semi-structured psychiatric interview and filled out MMPI-2, SCL-90-R, and K-WAIS. The cutoffs for AAS, APS, and MAC-R were a T≥60 (raw score≥6), a T≥54 (raw score≥22), and a T≥56 (raws core≥24), respectively (Shin, Min, 2012). The male substance abusers who qualified above all three cutoffs for the three scales also scored higher in most of the MMPI-2 clinical and supplementary scales. In contrast, those who qualified below all three cutoffs showed higher scores on L and K validity scales where as other clinical scales were significantly scored lower. The results that the substance abuse scales of MMPI-2 have usefulness in discriminating substance users in terms of clinical symptoms.
