Recently, the increase of combined response questions in the CSAT Spanish I section has been attributed to a larger student study burden as well as question writing errors. In order to deal with the issues, it is necessary to diagnose the problems in developing combined response questions and seek ways to create more valid combined response questions. The study analyzed 38 combined response questions in terms of contents, percentage of correct answers, item discriminations, number of options, and negatively worded stems. The study results are as follows. First, combined response questions are more appropriate as high difficulty level questions. The combination of options of the responses should not provide a clue for the correct answer. Second, the total number of the options should not exceed four. There is no need to increase many options to increase item difficulty because it is possible to discriminate high level students with small number of options. Third, none of the above as response is not appropriate since this would be lower both item discrimination and reliability. Fourth, negatively worded stems should be avoided because they confuse and make test takers choose distracters even if they understand the questions correctly.
