The purpose of this study is to (1) examine stress and rhythm patterns of English sentences compared with those in the Korean language, and (2) to introduce a class model for teaching sentence stress using the movie, A Beautiful Mind. The English language has stressed and unstressed words. Stressed words, called ‘content words,’ usually carry the meaning of a sentence, while unstressed words, called ‘function words,’ help to make the sentence function syntactically. Since content words take up the entire ‘beat' of a sentence while many function words are squeezed in between the beats, it is very important for Korean students to learn sentence stress in order to develop effective listening skills. When listening to English, Korean students tend to miss the content words of a sentence because they focus too much on the function words. In order to learn English rhythmic patterns students should develop a sense of regular stressed beats and be able to produce them without difficulty. This class model, using the movie, A Beautiful Mind, makes students more sensitive to sentence stress so that they can listen and speak more effectively, while also helping them to practice sentence stress more easily and with more engagement in the classroom.
