This paper compares the lexical approach with a method using an American TV drama. The purpose of the paper is to find similarities and differences and to find compromising points between the two. The biggest difference between them is that the lexical approach is essentially language-based whereas the method using American TV dramas uses lexis in two different ways. First, lexis is used in order to understand the content of the drama and second, it is used in the same way as the lexical approach. In order to examine how learners respond to the TV drama method, the drama Criminal Minds (Season 8, Episode 18) was used as teaching material. Three college students were subjects. The findings show that, with this method, the subjects used lexis in the same way they used it in the lexical approach. However, they realized what they had to do when they used the American drama method. Lastly, figures are used in order to show the differences in the process of language development between the two approaches. According to these figures, the lexical approach turns out to be a component of the method using the TV drama. However, the method using the drama needs further experimentation to be improved as an effective language teaching method.
