This study examines how video can be used in the English literature classroom to teach elements of literary analysis including characterization, setting, point of view, symbols, and irony in a work of literature. The study also proposes that video can be used to illustrate how the theological doctrine of predestination (election) and tropes such as the Byronic hero are embedded in literature and presented in visual form. Specifically, this study compares the Biblical story of Cain and Abel in the fourth chapter of the book of Genesis with the 1970's American television show Kung Fu in order to show how the literary and theological aspects of a literary text are used as an adaptation basis for a television series. The study highlights the literary parallels of both stories and shows how the use of video as a teaching tool can aid students increase their understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of literary texts. The study provides instructions on classroom applications and concludes with suggestions on the selection, viewing, and use of videos or movies. This study proposes that the use of video in the English literature classroom is a viable supplement and tool to teach aspects of literature, theology, and literary analysis.
