This study aims to investigate the overall effects of utilizing movies in the Korean EFL classroom. A meta-analysis of 34 research findings in 16 articles was conducted to synthesize the results of these studies by calculating the mean effect sizes. This study reviewed and analyzed the previous studies in terms of publication types, subjects, treatment period, types of movies, and dependent variables such as language proficiencies and affective factors. The results showed that utilizing English movies in the classroom had beneficial effects on learners in general (d=.398). It was found to be more effective for middle school, high school, and university students than for elementary school students. Also, the higher effect was observed, the longer the treatment period. Moreover, the effect sizes of linguistic domain were larger than those of affective domain. It was particularly effective for listening (d=.608). Regarding the movie types, using regular movies was more effective than using animation movies, although the difference was not statistically significant. No significant effect was observed on learners’ affective domain. However, there was a positive effect regarding ‘interest’, a sub-factor in the affective domain (d=.343). Pedagogical implications and suggestions for Korean EFL learners are also discussed.
