In this paper I attempts the structural analysis of Spanish emphatic affirmative polarity items such as ‘sí’ and ‘bien’. These items appear in preverbal positions and may be followed by the complementizer ‘que’. They have an discursive-semantic effect, i.e. they emphasize the truth value of the proposition. On the one hand,these emphatic polarity items give emphatic affirmative interpretation to simple declarative sentences. On the other hand, the sentences with emphatic polarity items ‘sí (que)’ and ‘bien (que)’ have several syntactic properties. In the literature, these items have been analyzed under the same structure. However, the constructions followed by ‘sí’ and ‘bien’ and those followed by ‘sí que’ and ‘bien que’ display different syntactic properties, such as the adjacency of emphatic polarity items to the verb and their word order, the appearance with another polarity item, etc. So, in this paper I will propose that they should be analyzed by the different syntactic structures to capture their different syntactic properties and provide empirical evidence based on Spanish data.
