『일본서기』 응신천황 14년～16년 조에 궁월군이 대규모의 무리를 이끌고 신라에서 일본에 도착했다는 기사가 나온다. 5세기 한반도에서 건너간 이들 신라계 이주민들은 하타씨[秦氏]라 불리며, 지금의 교토 서쪽 우즈마사 지역에서 세력가로 성장한다. 이렇게 일본에서 크게 성공한 신라계 이주민들의 이야기는 그들이 떠나온 지역에서 어떠한 형태로든 전승되었을 가능성이 크다. 『삼국유사』에 실린 ｢연오랑세오녀｣는 이러한 역사적 사실을 바탕으로 형성된 설화가 아닐까 추정해 보았다. 5세기 포항지역에는 대규모 이주민을 이끌만한 세력집단이 존재했다. 진 왕조로부터 인수를 받을 정도의 예족의 세력가가 지배하는 일정수준의 정치적사회가 형성되어 있었다. 포항지역 세력이 집단이주를 감행했던 배경에는 5세기의 정치사회적 불안감이 작용했던 것으로 보인다. 신라의 정복전쟁에 의하여 소국들이 독자적 정체성을 잃어가자 포항지역에서도 위기감을 느꼈을 것으로 보인다. 2세기 아달라왕의 시대는 박씨에서 석씨로 왕권이 넘어간 시대이고, 5세기 내물왕의 시대는 석씨에서 김씨로 왕권이 넘어간 시대이므로, 두 시대는 왕권을 장악한 성씨가 바뀌었다는 공통점을 갖고 있다. 일본이주의 시기로 설정된 ‘아달라왕 때’의 함의는 정치사회적인 불안이다. 이 불안감이 ｢연오랑세오녀｣에서 일식이라는 하늘의 변고로 상징화되었다. 이주민을 이끌었던 궁월군은 ‘융통왕’이라 일컬어졌다. 포항지역은 ‘도기야’ 즉 ‘도기왕의 들’이라 불렸다. 사마천의 『사기』｢흉노열전｣에 의하면, ‘도기왕’은 ‘현명한 지도자’라는 의미이다. ‘궁월군’과 ‘도기왕’의 의미는 상통한다. 포항지역의 가장 오래된 지명인 ‘근오기현’은 ‘도기야’와 같은 뜻의 말이다. ‘도기’를 이두식으로 표기한 것이 ‘斤烏支’이고, 한자식으로 표기한 것이 ‘都祈’이다. 흉노는 다른 북방유목민족과 달리 선우의 처를 ‘알씨閼氏’라 하였는데, 인접하였던 예맥족의 말에서 영향을 받은 것으로 보이며, ‘도기왕’도 예맥족의 언어일 개연성이 있다. 포항의 예족 일파는 고도의 비단직조술을 보유하였던 것으로 보인다. 중국의 고조선과 부여지역의 출토유물이 비단직조기술을 실증해준다. 신라계 이주민인 ‘하타씨’는 고도의 비단직조기술을 바탕으로 우즈마사지역의 세력가로 성장하였다. 하타씨인 진하승의 위상은, 광륭사 본전에 진하승 부부의 목각상이 목조미륵반가상 바로 옆자리를 차지하고 있다는 사실에서 확인된다. 우즈마사 지역에는 누에신사가 있다. 예맥족을 근간으로 하는 고조선이나 부여의 생활근거지와 관련되는 곳에서 출토된 대리석의 누에모양 장식품이나 도잠용은 6～7천 년 전에 이미 누에를 숭배하였음을 보여준다. 이러한 누에숭배와 비단직조 기술이 포항지역 예족의 세력가인 도기왕에게 전승되고, 일본으로 집단이주함으로써 궁월군의 후손인 하타씨와 우즈마사씨에 이르러 비단직조술이 고도화되고, 누에신사도 세워져 누에숭배가 계승되었다고 여긴다. ｢연오랑세오녀｣에서 연오랑과 세오녀가 일본으로 이주하자 해와 달이 빛을 잃었다는 것은, 도기왕의 일본이주가 신라사회에 타격을 주었음을 뜻한다. 연오랑 세오녀 부부가 일본에서 왕과 왕비가 되었다는 것은, 우즈마사지역에서 신으로 추앙받았던 진하승 부부의 모습이 투영된 것이다. 세오녀의 비단으로 하늘에 제사를 지내자 재앙이 없어졌다는 설화의 내용은, 신라계 이주민의 비단직조 기술이 신라 본토보다 선진적이었음을 우회적으로 표현한 것이다. 세오녀 비단에는 이러한 일련의 역사가 집약되어 있다.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze and prove that a fork tale “Yeonorang Seseonyeo” included in a famous Korean history book “Samgugyusa” is based on a historical fact of the success story of the migrants from Korean Peninsula to Japan in 5th Century (the “Migrants”, or “Migration”). For that purpose, the issues that will be discussed in the thesis are as below. (i) Whether there was a powerful figure who had power to organize and lead the Migrants from Pohang area in Korea to Kyoto area in Japan and (in case there was such an powerful figure) the characteristics of the Migrants; (ii) The political and social situation of Pohang area which caused the Migration; (iii) The meaning of “Gungweolgun” which referred to the leader of the Migrants and the relation between “Gungweolgun” and name of places within Pohang area; (iv) Whether the Migrants had advanced level of silk weaving skills and if so what is the root of such silk weaving skills; and (v) Whether the Migrant enjoyed the authority similar to that of the king and queen in Japan. First, there was an influential figure within Pohang area who had power to organize and lead the Migrants. The excavation in Pohang area, of a copper seal, manufactured Qin Dynasty (265 A.D. ～ 316 A.D.) that was awarded to the leaders of the surrounding ethnics, indicates the existence of a powerful leader at Pohang area. Second, political and social instability and insecurity appears to be the main reason for the Migration. At that time, territorial expansion by the Kingdom of Shilla was causing small sized tribal countries to lose autonomy and such phenomenon must have caused fear and stress to Pohang area as well. The excavation in Pohang area, of a “wood coffin covered with pebbles mound” which holds typical characteristics of the ones at Kyungju area, indicates that Pohang area was indeed becoming a part of “Kingdom of Shilla”. Further the pheonmenon of the solar eclipse (which was seen as the rage of the God by then) as portrayed in the story of “Yeonorang Seseonyeo”, indicates the fear and stress of Pohang area. Third, “Gungweolgun” which referred to the leader of the Migrants is also known as “Yungtongwang”, meaning a leader with flexibility and expertise while the same was named “Dogiya” at Pohang area before the Migration. What is worth noting here would be that not only the word “Dogiya” was originated from one of the oldest villages at Pohang area, but could also be traced back to the language of the “Yemaek Tribe”, a tribe originally located in the North of Korean Peninsula, not the “Huns”, which indicates that Migrates are branch of “Yemaek Tribe”. Fourth, the surname of the Migrants in Japan was written in “Zin” in Chinese characters and locally pronounced as “Hata”. Although the origin of the aforementioned surname is still under the dispute amongst Japanese scholars, they all agree that such notion is related to “silk” or “silk weaving skills”. Based on relics discovered at Liaoning Province in China (the territory governed by Gojosun Dynasty), “Yemaek Tribe” appears to have held advanced level of silk weaving skills, which must have been succeeded to the descendants at Pohang area, and then eventually to Japan through the Migrants. From this prospective, the description in the story of “Yeonorang Seseonyeo” that the sun and moon lost its lights, should be interpreted as depicting the history that the advance silk weaving skills is lost in “Kingdom of Shilla” due to the Migration. Lastly, the Migrants became a powerful figure in Japan based on their advance silk weaving skills they held. “Ilbonsagi”, a famous Japanese history book, records a story of one of the descendants of the Migrants, “Zin Jugong”, who was awarded the surname of “Daezin” (locally pronounced as “Uzumasi”, which literally means the great Zin) for his contribution of large amount of tax. Also the leader of the Migrants or the descendants thereof are worshipped as the God at shrines, located at Kyoto area in Japan. From this perspective, the description in the story of “Yeonorang Seseonyeo” that husband and wife became the king and queen respectively, should be understood as indicating a great success for the Migrants.
