This paper tries to figure out the nature of case assigned the argument in the Unaccusative, Ergative and Middle construction. Lots of studies have already pointed out that there is also a language with an ergative-absolutive case system as well as a language with a nominative-accusative case system. In Chomsky(1995, 2000, 2001), Agree is a computational operation to delete an uninterpretable features in a search space and the uninterpretable feature in Target and Goal activate Agree. Since case feature is uninterpretable the value of case is considered to be structurally determined namely Nominative or Accusative. However, regarding the nature of case assigned in the related constructions. I argue on the basis of the studies in Levin and Massam(1985) and Bobaljik(1993) that it is not a nominative but an absolutive case since the NP with an absolutive case has dual grammatical functions: subject and object. I suggest three possibilities for absolutive to be assigned structurally, each of which needs further studies.
