Since the liberation, the ideology that had penetrated throughout Korea’s entire modern history was the anticommunism to the extent of being called “the history of anticommunism ideology conflict” and the anticommunism is something which remains within the subconsciousness of most of our people to operate in a most powerful way.
The first thing Park Jung Hee who gained control of government through the May 16th military had advocated was the anticommunism. He had strengthened the anticommunism education of various dimensions while the anticommunism education was accomplished through school curriculum, press media and government agencies.
Through the historical fact called Korean War and various methods of education, anticommunism has turned out to display a powerful strength within the awareness of the people.
The incident of Lee Seung-Bok getting killed with his family by an armed communist guerilla became a one-in-a-million chance for the government to internalize the sense of anticommunism to the post war generation.
Lee Seung-Bok who is the victim of this incident became reborn as a boy hero who had resisted against communist part through the hero-making of the authority so that memorial halls and monuments became constructed while the statue of Lee Seung-Bok was built at the school grounds of elementary schools throughout the country.
Within the periodic atmosphere of the Post-Cold War during 1990’s and reconciliation of north and south, the atmosphere of reconciliation between the north and the south rose to a climax. As a result, the Lee Seung-Bok story dealt with in elementary school textbooks became disappeared starting the year 1997 while the Lee Seung-Bok statue that had been built at every school ground of elementary schools as a symbol of ideology created by the authority of Park Jung Hee era has now become a survival of olden days that must be removed. The disappearing statue of Lee Seung-Bok has been recorded as a form of documentary.
