Photographs are highly valuable as important historical records and materials. The nature of photographs, which is distinguished from that of documents, is representing the images of the past and revealing people’s consciousness of the corresponding age. Because of this nature, photographs occupy a key position as crucial materials for understanding the state, attitude, and idea of a specific era. However, photographs are damaged or degraded due to chemical and physical causes. They are preserved and restored by experts specialized in art works or cultural assets, but because of their characteristics there is a great limitation in the restoration of photographs and this is the reason that preservation is particularly important for photographs. There are few specialists in photograph preservation in Korea, and those working for photograph preservation at national and public institutions show problems in the preservation treatment of photographs due to lack of knowledge about photographs. Given the current situation as above, this study explored the degradation characteristics and preservation of photographs by analyzing the degradation of photographs according to temperature, humidity, light, and ultraviolet ray, which are some of the factors affecting the degradation of photographs. This study had to refer to foreign materials on photograph preservation with regard to sample, analysis equipment, and know‐how, and this shows the limitation of domestic research on photograph preservation that requires people’s attention. Thus, this study was focused mainly on finding key issues in domestic photograph preservation and suggesting problems in photograph preservation by identifying external factors affecting the degradation of photographs.
