편평상피세포폐암은 유전학적인 분자 표적인자를 갖고 있는 경우가 드물어서 EGFR TKI나 ALK 억제제 등의 표적제가 성공을 하지 못하여 백금계열의 항암제를 근간으로 2세대 항암제와 복합 치료가 표준 치료였으나 necitumumab 등의EGFR 단클론 항체 억제제나 ramucirumab 등의 VEGF 억제제 등이 항암 치료에 추가하여 생존기간의 향상을 보였고, 새로이 PD-1 또는 PD-L1 억제제 등의 immune check point 억제제가 1차 치료에 실패한 경우 승인을 받게 되어 편평상피세포폐암에서 새로운 치료의 장을 맞게 되었다. 더욱이 이들에대한 부작용은 세포독성 항암제보다 적어서 치료를 받는 동안에 환자들의 삶의 질도 향상되었다.
