The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of the instructional materials to enhance high school students’ abilities of constructing the scientific hypothesis. For this study, three lessons on the scientific hypothesis (one lesson about scientific inquiry process and two lessons about the way how to construct the scientific hypothesis) were applied to 106 tenth grade students (34 students in experimental group and 72 students in control group). The results showed that the instructional materials enhanced the students’ abilities to distinguish between the definition of a hypothesis and other scientific terms. Also that enhanced the students’ abilities to distinguish between a hypothesis and a prediction in the inquiry examples. In addition, the materials were effective in enhancing awareness of the possibility and the necessity of hypothesis testing and the necessity of constructing the hypothesis based on valid reasons and using the causal relationship between independent and dependent variables. Finally, they helped students to construct the scientific hypothesis: based on inquiry question, testable, using the causal relationship between independent and dependent variables, and based on valid reasons. The use of these instructional materials is expected to enhance high school student’s ability to construct the scientific hypothesis, which is believed to enhance creative thinking.
