We investigate the general attitude of researchers in biological sciences towards a number of issues of research ethics in order to set out general directives for the development of research ethics education program for biological research. We performed an on-line survey targeting the members of the Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology, and obtained responses from 687 members.By analysing the survey results, we have come to the following conclusions. (1) Despite the generally shared interests, many researchers feel that they know little about ethical issues which could be generated during their research. (2) Despite their recognition of the importance of ethical principles in biological research, researchers tend to set the freedom of research before social norms. (3) Although the relevant regulations for biological research are generally observed, the degree of observation differs from the Principal Investigators (high) to graduate students (low), and the reason for this non-observance is in many cases 'ignorance'.The survey results combined with the recent, international emphasis on the significance of research ethics strongly highlight the urgent need for the research ethics education program for Korean biological researchers.
