Since John Rawls’s A Theory of Justice(1971), the mainstream of political philosophy has focused on issues around (re)distributive justice in a society. Recently as the result of critical reflections on redistribution, the issue of recognition has been an addition to discussions of redistribution because there is an agreement that redistribution is not enough to achieve a just society and recognition has become a keyword of our time. As raised in the context of domestic society, there are also some reflections on redistribution by post-development theorists in the context of global society. Post-development theorists have criticized development theories and practices based on material (re)distribution, arguing that redistributive practices in the name of development necessarily result in tragedy, rather than improving the miserable plight of developing countries. Regretfully this post-development critique has not been paid attention to in a global society, partly because in their rhetoric, post-development theories do not reveal the real significance of the post- development critique. The purpose of this paper is to suggest an interpretation of the post-development critique, which not only reveal the real significance of the post-development critique, but also can suggest a positive program to address to its critique. In my analysis of the post-development critique, its critique should be interpreted as the emphasis on the respect or recognition deserved by developing countries. In this interpretation, I suggest that a Hegelian theory of reciprocal recognition, which proposes the cooperation between recognition-favoring institutions and recognitive attitudes, could be a positive program for ethical development in accord with this interpretation of the post- development critique.
