The purpose of the research was to empirically examine generalizability claims of Gottfredson and Hirschi’s(1990) general theory. The study collected information on self-control and deviance from two Korean samples, i.e., high school students and confined youthful offenders. The measures used in this study were based on Hirschi’s(2004) revised conceptualization of self-control. Hirschi redefined self-control as the set of inhibiting or restraining factors. It is a broader concept of self-control that more directly focuses on the process of decision making than Gottfredson and Hirschi’s earlier work, resulting in a merging of social control/bond theory and self-control theory. A self-report instrument was administered to an availability a sample(n=708) of high school students and youthful offenders to collect information on self-control and deviance. The results indicated that there was empirical support for cross-cultural and cross-group applicability claims of Gottfredson and Hirschi’s general theory using Hirschi’s revised concept of self-control.
