This study starts with the recognition that tourism interpretation is a form of intercultural communication and a means of telling the story about a place, site, object or location. However, the research on tourism interpretation in Korea is still in its infancy. Two reasons can be offered for this phenomenon. First, research into tourism interpretation has been focused mostly on job satisfaction surveys for tour guides or tourist satisfaction surveys concerning the performance of tour guides, with the research on Target Text(TT) left aside. Secondly, tourism interpretation has failed to attract academic interest from interpretation studies, since interpretation studies has been led by conference interpretation. Also tourism interpretation differs from other types of interpretation in that it does not have a speaker and forming interpersonal bond between a tour guide and tourists is an important consideration. Based on such characteristics of tourism interpretation, this study calls attention to the need of studying tourism interpretation as a proper research topic and explores the possibility of incorporating story telling techniques to tourism interpretation in order to make tourism interpretation a more enjoyable communication experience for international tourists.
