Scholars have suggested various factors such as faithfulness, readability and elegant expression as elements required for good translation. Among them, the most important element seems to be faithfulness. In other words, translation should be faithful to the original author, the original text itself and readers who read the translation. In reconstructing the author's intention and the messages of the text, translation is supposed to help the readers understand them. To this end, translators intervene between the original and translated texts and control numerous elements including writing style, text, structure and culture. Considering the fact that translation involves two or more cultures in any given situation or time, it is important for translators to capture the cultural characteristics of the original text, understand its messages based on these, and translate them to suit the culture of the translated text, or to control the cultural factor (Lee Jung-soon:2012). Therefore, the study posits the translator as the ‘mediator' of different cultures underlying in the original and translated texts, reviews major issues of translation and arguments on translation and culture, and, finally, examines domestication and foreignization translation as a key strategy for mediation between different cultures.
